Experience tells us that the creation of thermal energy utilities requires a unique team with a broad skill set. Across the Design – Build – Own – Operate spectrum, Fēnix has developed a great in-house team spanning consulting, engineering (conventional and renewables), construction, and contractor management. We’ve also built an incredible panel specializing in finance, regulatory and permitting readiness, and ownership strategy development.
Edward Smith, P.Eng. LEED AP®
Ed believes the formula for success is “win-win partnerships” and he’s built his career and the growth of profitable companies on this. A formal education specializing in Building Services marked the beginning of an accelerated career that went from Project Engineer at Howe Design & Management, London, to Senior Designer at VEL Engineering, Vancouver, culminating in a very successful tenure as CEO of Cobalt Engineering LLP – a Vancouver-based company operating in multiple countries that grew to 170 staff and was named a Top 50 Best Workplace in Canada multiple times.
In 2009, Ed resigned from Cobalt after 18 years and one year later set-out to prove that a win for the environment and a win for business is not only possible but highly scalable. Clean technology company Fēnix Energy was created. Specializing in the delivery of Thermal Energy Assets, Ed and his team are driving a mission to create the greenest cities across North America, one building and district at a time. The company’s unique Design – Build – Own – Operate business model leverages Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems to create utility-grade infrastructure that harvests, stores, and trades energy.
Fēnix Energy’s success is amplified by Ed’s open approach to leadership. He believes in continuous education, transparent management, and releasing the potential of people by supporting innovation from within the team and from the ground-up. The company’s commitment to collaboration and long-term strategic partnerships has not only added to the scalability and reach of Fēnix Energy’s solutions but also helped spread the undeniable truth that investing in renewables has a triple pay off – for society, the environment and the economy.
A former recipient of Business in Vancouver’s Top 40 Under 40 award, Ed is the Engineer of Record for the first two LEED Silver Certified buildings in Canada, and has led the concept design for Canada’s first LEED Platinum office. Ed was previously a member of the City of Vancouver’s Urban Design Panel, speaker at UBC’s executive group (Sauder School of Business), and a member of TEC Canada. Ed continues to share his business and leadership acumen at MacKay CEO Forums. Connect on LinkedIn
